At 10 am the students arrived from all over Sumba and gathered at Pak Franz’s house, our neighbor who lives 50 meters from the school. They walked together with their parents to the gate where the Merapu priests, locals, and children from the elementary school welcomed them with dances, music, and speeches.
It was a very emotional moment for all of us, standing inside the gate, being handed over to the students from their parents. We had a great day filled with speeches, commitments from all parties, and shared smiles, food, and gifts. All the students are so happy and excited to start this new period in their lives, and their parents are hopeful for a better future. The school team is very motivated to support each student to make them grow and become successful.

The first week of classes
Classes have begun! The students jumped into their first week of classes, splitting their time between English Class with Laura and Grant and studying the student handbook with Thomas and Aten.
In English class, they learn basic phrases, introductions, possessive pronouns, and numbers. In Thomas’s class, the students discussed and learned the student handbook and participated in fun team-building exercises.
